Less than 1 meter fabric … no problem!

You have these moments when you see a piece of a fabric and immediately know what you want to make out of it.

That was exactly with this piece of a little stretch woven satin.  It was just enough to make this top with drape neckline. I used the Vogue pattern V9771.

Drape Neckline, Top, Vogue Patterns, V9771, sewcialists, sewing, making own cloths, minimalism

This is perfect top to wear with my pencil skirts or pants.

Both – front and back, are cut on bias thus no bust darts are needed.

This is pattern which you can easy make in one day and it is great wardrobe builder.

Easy Two Hours Top

Long ago I have bought the KwikSew pattern 2740 – Misses’ Tops.

It is VERY simple, strait froward pattern. If you just starting sewing, starting using knit fabrics (jersey, interlock) – this is a perfect pattern for you.

KwikSew pattern, 2740, top, woman top, jersey, wool jersey, RPT Couture, handmade, sewcialists, made to order,

It is so simple that I am ashamed of buying it. It looks like I’ve bought it only to use a paper it is printed on. It is so heavy adjusted to my measurement that there is little left from the original.  Still – if you start sewing with jersey – just use this pattern for simple tops.

Together with the fabrics for the French Jacket I have bought this light blue jersey wool. It is a little felted on one side. I had immediately very warm feeling when I touched this fabric.

KwikSew pattern, 2740, top, woman top, jersey, wool jersey, RPT Couture, handmade, sewcialists, made to order,

I decided to make a simple top – perfect addition to skirts for my business attire. I have bought only 80 cm (about 31,5 in). It is just enough to make a top – usually I put a seam at the center back. Continue reading “Easy Two Hours Top”

Me-Made-May 2014 Day 31

I cannot believe the May is already over. It is time for Me-Made-May’14 overview. I managed to keep to my pledge to wear a handmade item of clothing or jewellery everyday (and night).

Thanks Zoe for another fantastic Me-Made-May experience!

The ‘Kendra’s Night Out’ Challenge

Week ago I have got surprized e-mail from Kendra Thornton with a question if I would like to participate in the ‘Kendra’s Night Out’ Challenge. I am travelling myself and I am staying in all kind of hotels so I though – Great!

The next e-mail contained more details:

The plan is to start the evening with Sunset Service at the Top of the Standard. We will drift into our New York night with the smooth jazz stylings of that night’s entertainment, while sipping on a cocktail or two. I’ve heard amazing things about the small plate offerings here, and the idea of a swanky supper club vibe is perfect for this getaway. Just thinking about the glittering skyline makes me a bit weak in the knees. I can’t quite believe I’m on my way to a real, honest to goodness grownup adventure. It’s long overdue! The requested style is cocktail attire, but I’m at a bit of a loss. Does that mean I need a long or short dress? Can I go with a bright color, or should I stick to a tried and true little black dress? You get the point, I need your expertise.

While I’m thrilled to be heading to the Big Apple, I have to say I was a bit overwhelmed at first. There is just so much to do! Without the expert advice I received at Gogobot, I’m not sure where I would have started. The world travelers I encountered there were invaluable in building my itinerary. I’d never even heard of the Standard High Line Hotel before researching this trip, and now I ‘m staying at one of the very best hotels in this incredible city. And now I turn to you, my fashion experts, to help me look like I’m a natural New Yorker. As we all know, whether seeing a show, lounging at the Top of the Standard, or dining at a local restaurant, the right outfit can be the difference between a good night, and an experience to be treasured forever.

I decided to make two boards (actually three):

1. Good to combine essentials for travelling and the day at the city in brown and blue shades

The 'Kendra's Night Out' Challenge - board by Red Point Tailor - day in the city

The 'Kendra's Night Out' Challenge - board by Red Point Tailor - day in the city

2. Evening – Cocktail attire – knee length dress, smart, elegant, modest accessories.

The 'Kendra's Night Out' Challenge - board by Red Point Tailor - evening in the city

This challenge has shown me that I still miss few garments in my wardrobe, e.g. pants – to make my own business trips more comfortable.

Something easy in between…

Sometimes you have it. You see a few pieces of a fabric and you know what you will make. I had few small pieces left after making the vintage warp top and as this fabric is a little thin I needed something small under the wrap (especially for a little cooler days). It was just perfect to squeeze this small top. It will be perfect as well under the jacket to a skirt – I have already tried :-).

As I did not have enough fabric to finish edges with a band I used this transparent elastic. I attached it to the edges of the neckline and armhole with a serger.

New wardrobe essentials in my wardrobe

Looking outside I see winter weather – temperature below zero, snow falling down, ice on the water, cold wind … so it was time to make few summer tops. After this long winter

I have bought these summer fabrics – jersey, on the fabric market few weeks ago and it was high time to make something out of them.

The results below:

Quick update before leaving for Milan

I was hoping to finish the LDBD however I had to remake the zipper. I sew in the normal – old fashion one, but I did not like it. I had to rip it off and sew in the blind zipper. Few hours lost…

I attached the satin belt with handmade glass buckle. I still have to make a hem with kick pleat at the back and give a good press.

I see my Meisje was sitting on the dress – I have to clean it up before wearing Knipogende emoticon.

Afterword the time will come to finish the UFO dark blue jacket and the one in grey as well.

After correcting two RTW skirts I was so fed up that I had made this top as wearable muslin. I wanted to test this pattern. It is something similar to D2N of Marian Denmark only this one is from woven fabric cut on bias. There is no back closure or site zipper so I was curious if I would be able to put in on. Surprisingly yes. The bias is making it ‘stretch’ enough.

And now I really have to go, the plain will not wait for me.

Anyone in Milan coming days?

Take care – Red Point Tailor

D2N Top of the year

I know I am getting boring with this D2N tops but I promised to take the photos and here they are.
This top is really top of they year!

I did not use the elastic tape for finishing the back neck line but I used stripe of the same jersey. As you can see I have changed the finishing of armholes in this model as well.
I love working with jersey, sewing on serge – it is so easy…

# 2 Day-To-Night Drape Top (pattern by MariaDenmark)

The back neck line and armholes I have finished as well with the stripe of jersey only this time I turned it over and stitched.

I like both of them and I will for sure wear them often. Definitely addition to my wardrobe essentials.

Having my camera on I have taken as well photos of my other top I have made base on Vogue pattern 7799. I was posting about it here.

My skirt with high tail fits as well good and I am really glad with the final result.

Next week there is a huge fabric market – Stoffen Spektakel in Zwolle (NL) – and I am already making a list what kind of fabrics, colours, prints I would like to buy. I am very excited! I am sure there will be a lot of summer fabrics….

New tops coming soon…

Today the Vogue patterns have arrived I have ordered a week ago.

Vogue Pattern top V8390 Vogue Pattern top V8649

Each pattern has different front and neckline finishing. I see a lot of possibilities for making tops from these two jersey fabrics.

It appeared that below pattern is meant to be cut from woven fabric. No problem… enough to experiment. It can be ease made of jersey Glimlach.

Results of my sewing week-end…

It  was great! Sewing weekend – it was so long ago I sew…

sewing, MariaDenmark pattern, Day-To-Night-Drape-Top, Kwik Sew, Kwik Sew pattern, skirt, top, kick pleat, blind zip

I faced however the serge which is still having issues with cutting the jersey fabric and my sewing machine still making loops. The maintenance did not help in both cases which means I will have to repeat it.
I thing that the broken below hook grip in my sewing machine was a result of something which is incorrect somewhere else.
I try to sew on it but probably I will be forced to buy a new sewing machine. No Husqvarna this time –I have to say I am very disappointed with this model.

Still I was determined and I have managed to finish – not one – but two Day-To-Night Drape Tops (pattern by MariaDenmark)

sewing, MariaDenmark pattern, Day-To-Night-Drape-Top, Kwik Sew, Kwik Sew pattern, skirt, top, kick pleat, blind zipsewing, MariaDenmark pattern, Day-To-Night-Drape-Top, Kwik Sew, Kwik Sew pattern, skirt, top, kick pleat, blind zip

and one top based on KwikSew 2740 model B (OOP). I will probably need to correct the neckline – make it a little shorter so it will lay better.

On top of this I have finished a skirt.

It has strait – pencil – line with higher tail. I have made kick pleat on the back and blind zipper with buttons.

Now I have to check if I still fit in it… as it was quite a long time I started to make it Knipogende emoticon.

I will take some more photos later – in the daylihgt.

Now it’s time for the next UFO’s!
