The EMTC – European Master Tailor Congress is the most important German-speaking Congress for the tailoring trade.

It will take place in Basel, Switzerland from Thursday 29 May till Sunday, 1 June 2014. (check the blog here)

The European Master Tailor Congress (EMTC) began 10 years ago as Four Countries Meeting for German-speaking countries in Europe. My First BvK Technical Fashion Day

What a wonderful day it was – my first Technische Modevakdag (Technical Fashion Day) by de BvK  Branchevereniging van Kleermakers & Modevakscholen – (Dutch Association of Tailor and Fashion Design Schools).

The day started with welcome words and short introduction and checking the stands (me).

Then I headed to the first workshop – Technieken uit de jaren 50 nog steeds ultramodern (the 50’s techniques – still ultramodern) by Ineke de Jong.
Ineke – who makes garments based on Vintage Vogue patterns – presented the specifics of vintage patterns and ways of finishing the corners to attach the gussets as well as bounded buttonholes techniques.
After her presentation we could closer look at the garments pieces she has made.

Well, the vintage patterns and the techniques where not new for me however it was for a majority of sitting in the room. For me it was interesting to see the beautiful garments made base on the patterns I know.

Before the lunch break it was time to visit the small exhibition with stands with sewing supplies, sewing/couture books and fabrics.

To my pattern stash I added dark blue wool for a dress or a jacket & a skirt, stripe viscose lining – dark blue, 2 silk fabrics for a tops or part of a dress. Lot’s of ideas!

Catching up on reading

Before visiting hours at the hospital I was ‘shopping’ in Wejherowo. (PL). I have come across a fabric shop with wonderful fabrics. I could not resist and I have bought 2 pieces of silk for blouses.

However as sewing is not so possible I am catching up on reading.

Having in mind starting again sewing business I have bought this book How to Start a Home-based Fashion Design Business  by Angela Wolf.

‘ This book will be a priceless resource for those considering adventuring into the fashion industry, yet not knowing how or where to start. Comprised of detailed information, How to Start a Home-based Fashion Design Business will be a guide for the aspiring designer to plan and execute a successful home based business. This material will not only provide a fashion realm, but will show how to create additional revenue streams in the sewing field. This book will be the “one stop shop” for the small designer.’

This book is a great first step in entering a fashion design industry. Has helpful information on designing clothing, contacting clients, examples of contracts, etc. This book is showing the reality, no colourful stories – just how it is.

Very important aspect of balance between family and work is discussed as well – which very often is forgotten.

Starting sewing business–read this book
