It was difficult to resist – new fabrics in my fabric stash

This is a part of fabrics I have bought during the fabric market – Stoffenspektakel in Zwolle.

There are mostly jerseys for tops (black, red and yellow) – quick projects – as well as a stretch fabric for pants. Yes, I will have to tackle this topic again. Maybe I will have to find a sewing partner to help me with fitting. This will be in-between project while working on a French jacket – a part of the Little French Jacket sew-along.

On my cutting table

Coming week I will be away for my work but still I would like to take some sewing work with me.

I have few fabrics I have bought to make a Chanel-like jacket. Some of them are silk with cotton or linen. I have bought as well the silk organza for interlining and silk for lining. All is set up. At least 2 fabrics will be transfer to a jacket based on a Vogue pattern 8804 by Claire Shaeffer.

The pattern pieces in size 8 (I checked the ease and I think size 8 will fit better) are already traced on paper and I marked the seam allowances, grain line, notches and all other needed marks Glimlach.

Me Made May 2013 has officially started!

I am very exited with the Me-Made-May 2013 challenge. Specially that I promised myself to make during this month a pants. I have bought so beautiful fabrics that I cannot wait to wear them.

I am using the Vogue pattern V8781 model E – straight-legged pants with waistband with hook/eye closure and mock fly zipper. Generally speaking the model is very simple and that’s what I like about it. It would be a good basis for other pants.

I have made a pattern for size 10 as usual and started to work on muslin – I used a piece of fabric for curtains I once bought. After the 1st try pants were ready I have seen all kind of folds, wrinkles and gathers.

So I started to studying a very good book – Fitting & Pattern Alteration by Elizabeth G. Leichty, Della Poterburg-Steineckert, Judith A. Rasband – I have bought few months ago.

Me-Made-May '13, MMM2013, Muslin, Trousers, vogue

This book shows possible cases of wrinkles due to the figure shape and the different ways of dealing with them. It is as well presenting the pattern alterations depending on whether you are dealing with RTW garment or self-drafted pattern – very handy.Me-Made-May '13, MMM2013, Muslin, Trousers, vogue

When you are on your own it is ‘easier’ to check and alternate the front of the muslin and almost impossible to really see and correct back parts. Additionally the Vogue pattern is designed for a woven fabric and I am making my pants from woven stretch fabric.

I have transferred all adjustments on the pattern

Me-Made-May '13, MMM2013, Muslin, Trousers, vogueMe-Made-May '13, MMM2013, Muslin, Trousers, vogue

and I have made second muslin. This time from the woven stretch fabric (the same as my future pants).

Me-Made-May '13, MMM2013, Muslin, Trousers, vogue Me-Made-May '13, MMM2013, Muslin, Trousers, vogue

The results where a little better but still there was a lot of wrinkles…

After the second one I took an old RTW pants I am not wearing any more (only when painting 🙂  and cut it in pieces. They are not so perfect but I was hoping it would help.

Me-Made-May '13, MMM2013, Muslin, Trousers, vogueMe-Made-May '13, MMM2013, Muslin, Trousers, vogue

As you can see the differences are huge.

I adjusted the pattern and muslin and sew it again. Well, it was a little better

I am a little fed up with this all corrections. I am making my last muslin – hopefully wearable – from the stretch woven jeans fabric. I do not have enough fabric to make the full  length trousers so either I will keep it short (maybe I will make even shorter) of I will add a ‘cuffs’.  The most important it has to fit first 🙂

Me-Made-May '13, MMM2013, Muslin, Trousers, vogue

So three muslins further I am almost back to the beginning. The wrinkles are still there – true a little less – but still, plus I see other issues as well, hrrrr…..

I am checking again the fitting book, reading all fitting advises in Threads magazines (which actually are showing only simple adjustments so even less then in the book) and I have enrolled to the Craftsy online course Pant Fitting Techniques by Sandra Betzina.

Other option is to draft self the basic pattern for the trousers. It would be a good exercise.

If this will not work I will just sell the fabrics and start to work on a Chanel-like jacket.

Yes, I know why I prefer to make and wear dresses, rocks and jackets… 🙂

Fabric market- April 2013 Apeldoorn

So, I have done it again… I think that this long winter dark days inspired me to buy these sunny, bright fabrics for summer during the Stoffenspektakel in Apeldoorn (NL).

The plan is as follow:

Dresses (maybe only skirt – still to decide) – cotton, linen en silk – some mixtures of these:

Fabric market–April 2013 ApeldoornFabric market–April 2013 Apeldoorn

Top – jersey viscosa – it is nice drapping fabric but I don’t think I will make another D2N top by Maria Denmark. I would like to test other pattern:

Stofffen Spektakel Zwolle – Fabric Market in Zwolle (NL)

What a day! What fabrics! Lot of fabrics! Lot of fabulous fabrics! I have made my list but I was lost the moment I entered the huge hall. These beautiful prints and colours. I was dizzy!

I have promised myself to by few fabrics for summer tops and here they are:

fabric summer tops stoffen spektakel zwolle cotton silk viscose

For sure there will be at least two D2N tops – I love this patterns. I have 2-3 woven fabrics for different but as well simple tops. Most fabrics are cotton, cotton with silk or viscose.

And for summer jacket I have bought this loose woven fabric – mix of cotton, silk and viscose.

fabric summer jacket stoffen spektakel zwolle cotton silk viscose

I think I will have enough tops for summer. I have bought as well mix of cotton with silk in black for the next LBD – never enough Knipogende emoticon.

I have for sure enough to do now – even more – but working with these colours will make all efforts worth it.

New tops coming soon…

Today the Vogue patterns have arrived I have ordered a week ago.

Vogue Pattern top V8390 Vogue Pattern top V8649

Each pattern has different front and neckline finishing. I see a lot of possibilities for making tops from these two jersey fabrics.

It appeared that below pattern is meant to be cut from woven fabric. No problem… enough to experiment. It can be ease made of jersey Glimlach.
